Why we need your support
50 Australians are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every day.
That's more than 18,000 people each year. Around 150,000 Australians are currently living with the condition.
Parkinson’s is the second most common neroloigcal disease in Australia after dementia. It is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement and can also impact mood, thinking, sleep, and digestion. It is caused by a loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain.
While Parkinson’s is more common in older adults, around 1 in 5 people diagnosed are of working age, with some cases occurring in people in their 30s and 40s.
Common motor symptoms include tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement and balance issues, but can also cause non-motor symptoms including anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive changes.
While there is no cure yet, symptoms can be managed through a combination of medications, physical therapy, counselling, and regular exercise which is key to improving quality of life.
Your support will help to increase essential clinical services for people living with Parkinson’s including Occupational Therapy, Counselling and Speech Pathology, as well as valuable Exercise Physiology Services like the Body Brain x Fitness studio.
