Why we need you to Pedal
One Australian is diagnosed with Parkinson’s every 40 minutes - that’s more than 13,000 people each year. Around 200,000 Australians are currently living with the condition.
Parkinson’s is the second most common brain condition after Alzheimer’s. It is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement and can also impact mood, thinking, sleep, and digestion. It is caused by a loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain.
While Parkinson’s is more common in older adults, around 1 in 5 people diagnosed are of working age, with some cases occurring in people in their 30s and 40s.
Common motor symptoms include tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement and balance issues, but can also cause non-motor symptoms including anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive changes.
While there is no cure yet, symptoms can be managed through a combination of medications, physical therapy, counselling, and regular exercise which is key to improving quality of life.
Your support will help to increase essential clinical services for people living with Parkinson’s including Occupational Therapy, Counselling and Speech Pathology, as well as valuable Exercise Physiology Services like the Body Brain x Fitness studio.
